2. Accessibility and usability
Learning outcomes
At the end of the Accessibility and usability topic you will be able to:
- recognise that our users have varying abilities and disabilities
- recognise that web accessibility benefits everyone
- recognise that all content published on UQ's websites must meet accessibility standards
- access tools and information to improve accessibility and usability.
Web content accessibility
Making your website accessible ensures that your content is accessible to everyone, regardless of ability. All users should be given equal access to engage and interact with content comfortably and easily, with any barriers removed.
If you're publishing content on the web, you must meet UQ's accessibility standards, including standards set by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Digital accessibility is a key objective of UQ's Disability Action Plan.
Our content should be accessible to everyone, including people with:
- visual impairments
- motor disabilities
- hearing impairments
- cognitive impairments
- learning difficulties.
Following good web accessibility practices can also improve site search engine optimisation (SEO), speed and performance across a wider range of devices.
Accessibility considerations are built into our guidance for creating and maintaining content. Doing things like using correct headings, writing meaningful link text and providing alternative text for images will help you meet accessibility standards.

Accessibility tools
There are many accessibility tools that can support your practice in creating accessible content and help you to identify accessibility errors. WAVE is one of the tools you can use to assess the accessibility of your website.
