Centralised websites
In 2014, ITS began a process of transforming UQ’s web and digital presence - through a combined effort of development, design and content transformation. We are consolidating our websites and online information into key centralised websites - my.UQ (Current students), Current staff and Campuses. The centralised websites make it easier for users to find the information they need.
2. Migrating to a centralised website
Content from many UQ websites is being migrated into one of our centralised websites, helping us provide a consolidated view of UQ, and decommission standalone sites. Some websites are not appropriate for consolidation, and will remain stand-alone websites.
If you manage a website that you believe could be consolidated into a centralised site, please contact the ITS Web Services team and we can discuss the options with you.
If it is determined that your website should be consolidated into a centralised site, ITS follows a defined process for the content migration.
Content migration process
A content migration project is a collaborative effort between the website owner (organisational unit) and ITS.
The project team is usually made up of the following:
Within ITS:
- Senior web coordinator
- Web content producers
Within the organisational unit:
- Senior stakeholder
- Primary liaison
- Subject-matter experts
Key activities
There are several key activities and milestones that form part of content migration projects:
- Kick-off meeting
- Outline a project plan
- Audit content to determine what needs to be migrated
- Estimate the scope of content and timeframes needed for content development
- Outline information architecture (site structure and navigation)
- Rewrite content according to UQ style and web best practices
- Organisational unit review for factual accuracy and content approval
- Launch content on centralised website
- Apply redirects from the old site, to avoid users encountering broken links
- Decommission the old site
We will collaboratively work with you throughout the migration project. Scheduling in a content migration project is dependent on the priorities and resources of both ITS and your organisational unit.
